Oak Floor Sanding & Restoration

Hardwood flooring such as Oak have greater durability in comparison to a softwood such as Pine, for example. It is all due to the structural cells of the timber -which in hardwoods are tightly closed. This effectively is what produces a solid end product.

So with this in mind, how does sanding oak floors compare to that of softwoods such as Pine? The answer, not massively different at all apart from a few key aspects. The first choosing the right abrasive to start with, this will depend on the condition of the floor and most importantly as mentioned in previous pages, the wear layer.

Generally you can begin sanding oak floors at a higher grade abrasive, lets say 60 grit for example (providing no deep scratches are present). While oak floors are easier to sand -from the machines point of view, a greater level of skill is required to achieve a superb finish.

This again goes back to the structures of the wood, which as we now know are closed. Meaning the machine requires less contact with the floor to remove its surface. So what does this mean when it comes to sanding?

The first thing is speed, never allow the big machine to stop dead even for a split second while the drum is in contact with the floor, as this will certainly leave a deep gauge to the floor.

The second, speed again! Once you have reached higher grades of abrasives, say 80-120 grit, it’s very important you move quickly to prevent burn marks appearing.

The last thing, do not to over sand. Once an area of the floor is stripped clean back to bare wood and is free of any imperfections, move along to the next section. Going over and over the same piece will also leave burn marks not to mention remove way too much of the floor.

Oak Parquet Floor Sanding & Restoration

Sanding oak parquet flooring, or any parquet for that matter, is most definitely a job for a professional floor sanding company. Many sanders today still debate which method of restoration is best suited to this elegant type of wood flooring.

As the grains of the parquet blocks are laid in multiple directions, it is not possible to ‘sand with the grain’ as you should this is where -the debates start.

Many flooring professionals will argue you sand diagonally. This in turn sands with the direction of the grain in one direction, but completely against it on the other. This also tends to over sand certain areas of the floor, which is known as ‘dishing’.

So which method do we use, you ask?

All will be revealed during our consultation! However rest assured we can achieve a lovely flat, scratch free and truly stunning parquet floor.
