School Hall Floor Sanding & Restoration
This was possibly one of the most difficult School Hall Floor Sanding projects we’ve carried out in recent years.
After a long chat with the caretakers, we knew exactly what these floors has instore for us; Years of metallised floor polish! This wasn’t to be our only obstacle however; a perimeter of raised access panels surrounded the beautiful, finger-block floors!
As usual, we got straight into action and started on a 36 grit abrasive. Zirconia being the ideal choice due to it’s ability to also sand metal.
Once the floors were flat and we were happy the metal, access panels were safe and no longer stood proud, we moved onto a 60 grit, followed all the way up to 100 grit.
After this, we used our specialist machine: The Bona Flexisand (see more on our equipment here). Now the floors were flat, smooth and scratch-free, we had one last step in our process to help remove any fine metal shavings (these can cause black spots during the sealing process). To help eliminate this, we buffed the entire floor using the Bona Tampico brush. This would help remove any imbedded metal filings and also remove any stubborn dust from the grains of the wood. Ensuring a smoother finish with less grain raise.
After a thorough vacuum, the floors were sealed with a specialist primer to ensure to issues with contamination from the metal and also the timber itself being it was an exotic species. Finally, the floors were finished using two coats of commercial grade lacquer.
